Firstly I have to apologise as I'm still trying to work out the best way to present these text based reports so please give me some feedback on what you'd like to see.
Secondly I forgot a photo for the first turn however as you can imagine not much excitement takes place in the opening frame of the game so nothing was really missed.
This game took place on the usual Friday Night games at my local games store 'The Dice Spot'. Thanks to Al for hosting the evening as usual as he always allows us a few tables on their busiest night of the week.
Colonel Vessery - Outmanoeuvre, Heavy Laser Cannon, Engine Upgrade
Rexler Brath - Predator, Heavy Laser Cannon, Engine Upgrade
IG88B - Mangler Cannon, Auto thrusters, Determination, Inertial Dampeners, Proximity Mines, Fire Control System
IG88C - Mangler Cannon, Auto thrusters, Determination, Inertial Dampeners, Proximity Mines, Fire Control System
I quickly designed this list for my brother to have a game against me but shortly realised I'd forgot to pack the Proximity Mine counters when we arrived at the gaming store. My bad bro.
I spotted something in a battle report last week which intrigued me and I decided I had to have a go at it myself. Rather than the traditional approach to deployment (for me at least) of facing your forces against your opponents and then simply closing the gap I stuck both Defenders facing their flank to the enemy and then hopefully would break off towards the enemy at different moments to eventually get behind them and cause some trouble. Then of course I had Helmuth's infamous translation running through my head "No plan survives contact with the enemy". But I had the elite TIE Defenders at my disposal and two of the Imperials finest pilots so what could possibly go wrong?
I zoomed from right corner to left and by about turn 3 decided to turn into the battle ground and was facing off against IG-88B.
With the initial jousting over and done with and me coming out worst I had to put a lot more intelligence into my flight patterns in order to get the most out of my Defenders. With the Auto thrusters and the free evade tokens my brother was generating from the boost actions it was really tricky to get consistent damage on the bots. Sadly it was by my design that this was taking place!
One bot took off after Brath and scored a critical (Damaged Sensor Array) whilst the good Colonel keep getting into positions to use Outmanoeuvre to its best effect and slowly but surely started killing shields. Brath zoomed about to begin another staffing run and got bumped for his troubles but at least it meant he only took fire from one ship as opposed to two and by the end of the round or next IG88B had two damage cards to his name.
Now was a good time to create some distance between the bots and I so both the Defender pilots floored it 5 forward and a barrel roll for the Colonel ensured I wasn't going to ram straight into a debris field whilst Rexler repaired his Damaged Sensor Array. S-turn and zip forward moved the bots and their was no shooting this round from either force. (Apologies for crap photo!).
By this stage it was just a matter of keeping one of the Defenders in shooting range of the remaining bot whilst the other could fly decoy and just do its best to avoid damage. I kept reminding my brother however how different things would have been had some numpty remembered the proximity mine tokens and I'm sure there will be a re-match shortly.
Rexler shot off to play bait whilst the Colonel begun to tail the remaining bot.
Firstly if you made this far thank you very much! I decided to change the format up a little in the last part of the game to get a feel for what the readers would prefer. I don't mind the slide show with the explanations at the bottom as it provides enough info whilst the pictures are pretty solid at explaining where each ships intentions are but please provide some feedback.
Initially when Brath got smashed and had no shields I was on the back foot thinking how on earth was I going to bounce back from it but managed to overcome some adversity. I never look forward to facing my brothers 'Bro-bots' as I think they're a hard counter to dual defenders and they're just as tricky and with the sheer amount of fire power they can dish out (mines excluded) they can cripple a Defender in one volley if they roll well and of course I roll poorly. I'm sure that the ultra observant readers would have picked up a proximity mine counter in the later turns which was have Tony to thank for but by that stage I don't think it would have saved the lone bot from their destruction.
I've no doubt a re-match will come up shortly and I'm even keen to play the bots myself against the Double D's to see what I would do differently but please if you have any feedback on the battle report, lists or even the weather please comment away!
Thanks for reading.
