Anyway queue Wednesday night this week I get home after a day in the office and X-wing is all set up ready to go on the dining room table and gorgeous wife is at the helm of her classic list she's been laying the smack down on me with.
After reading about a regional report in the US where the reporter took dual defenders and went 7-1 I was convinced I had to get back on board the Defender train and try and make it work. I knew from the onset it was going to be an uphill battle given the sheer fire power that I was going against but it would be a learning experience.
The list I was using:
Rexler Brath - HLC, Hull Upgrade, Predator
Colonel Vessery - HLC, Stealth Device, Lone Wolf, Ion Pulse Missiles
2 x Blue Squadron Pilots - Heavy Laser Cannon
All the Rebels have to deploy first due to pilot skill and Chewie takes the far right flank whilst the B's remain close together on the other flank and I place the Defenders somewhat opposite them.
Both B-wing take stress tokens as the first banks and the other pulls a straight 3 to bridge the gap I imagine. Chewie pulls a straight 4 and slaps down a Focus token.
Colonel Vessery zooms a straight 5 up the flank and focuses whilst Rexler conservatively pulls a 4 straight and barrel rolls to get some cover from an asteroid.
First B-wing cruises forward 1 shedding its stress token and placing a target lock onto Colonel Vessery. The second B banks 1 and barrel rolls whilst Chewie gently 2 banks towards where the action is going to take place. Colonel Vessery once again repeats last rounds move heading 5 forward to completely clear any damage and barrel rolls whilst Rexler repeats the same move as the Colonel and the barrel roll puts a B-wing into his sights.
Brath puts 3 damage onto the B-wing whilst the Colonel matches that leaving a limping B on the flank. Unfortunately I left the Colonel a little too close to Brath losing out on the Lone Wolf trigger and I lose the Stealth Device and lose 2 shields thanks after the B-wing spends its target lock which I was pretty frustrated at because it could have easily have been prevented.
The wounded B-wing 1 banks and target locks Rexler whilst the remaining B performs a K-turn however it just bumps a Defender. Chewie 1 turns and keeps making his way to the fight whilst the Defenders scatter. The Colonel 4K turns and focuses whilst Brath pulls a 3 turn and barrel rolls to keep a B-wing in sights.
In combat Rexler puts down 3 damage onto a B-wing whilst the good Colonel destroys the wounded B-wing spending his focus token. Chewie shorts a single shield of Rexler Brath's.
B-wing does a 2 turn and barrel roll whilst Chewie hits it for 3 straight and slaps a target lock onto the good Colonel. The Colonel 1 banks and focuses whilst Brath heads into bumping position 3 straight and hits Chewie blocking him from any damage leaving Vessery at range 3 and me thinking rolling 4 dice with lone wolf would be a pretty secure deal.
Colonel strips Chewie of 4 shields in the combat phase but the return fire is the most shocking part for me, I roll no evades whatsoever and naturally lone wolf gives me a single evade allowing him to live.
The remaining B-wing 1 turns for a stress token, Chewie drifts into a 3 bank. Vessery 4k turns for his final turn and slaps down a target lock onto Chewie whilst Rexler 4k's as well placing a target lock onto Chewie as well.
The start the combat phase off Brath lands 2 more hits onto Chewie keeping the target lock for Vessery and he launches his Ion pulse missiles slapping the dual Ion tokens onto him. Chewie pulls the trigger and Vessery vanishes into space dust.
B-wing 2 turns towards the action watching Chewie drift forward. Rexler tails the Wookie with a straight 3 and focuses in order to do some flip card action however I can only sink through a single hit and although I flip it and it turns out to be a blind pilot I still can't help but feel betrayed by the dice! The B-wing unloads onto Brath and takes 3 damage one being a console fire.
The B-wing holds with a 1 straight and plants a target lock onto the last Defender and Chewie pulls a 1 turn hugging the board edge. Brath does a 1 bank and plants a focus and I think I made a mistake here by paying attention to the B-wing. I blast away at the nearby B-wing but can only land 1 hit, yay. I somehow think I've dodged the bullet when Chewie doesn't land a hit but it all comes down the to the B-wing who blasts Rexler Brath into oblivion and I eat wookie appendage for like the 4th time this week. Ouch.
Well I thought I started off relatively well but I think perhaps I developed some tunnel vision whilst I got the opportunity to slam the pulse missiles into Chewie. From deployment I should have kept Brath further away to ensure Lone Wolf was always activating. Poor form on my part. Well still learning and chalk this up as a learning experience. More games tonight to play!
