This game was against Dan who I'd seen before at league but this was the first opportunity I'd had to play him and I must say I'm looking forward to gaming against him again because not only is he a nice guy but he rolls as many blanks as I do and that's a hard quality to find.
I was running the usual list:
Omicron Group Pilot - Emperor Palpatine, Ion Projector
Darth Vader - TIE/x1, Veteran Instincts, Advanced Targeting Computer, Engine Upgrade
Juno Eclipse - TIE/x1, Push the Limit, Advanced Targeting Computer, TIE MKII Engine
Dan was running the following:
Scimitar Squadron Pilot - Extra Munitions, Homing Missiles, Proximity Mines, TIE MKII Engine
Echo - Veteran Instincts, Intelligence Agent, Advanced Cloaking Device
Darth Vader - Juke, TIE/x1, Advanced Targeting Computer, Engine Upgrade
It was a bit of a mirror match in terms of Vader and this is why I've run Veteran Instincts on him for this and chasing down TIE Phantoms so I was interested to see how this would play out. I had to pay particular attention to the Bomber to ensure I didn't get too close behind it and eat a mine but also when jousting it ensure I didn't sit out at range 2-3 with a target lock on me.
Echo is pretty tough simply because of the amount of places the Phantom can end up is pretty insane.
Dan had put Intelligence agent on his Phantom to ensure he could really ensure his de-cloak action meant something and lined him up for maximum damage.
In the second turn Vader kept following the TIE Bomber putting two damage onto it and trying not to eat a mine whilst Juno was heading to the table edge to either reinforce Vader or situation depending pull a short K-turn to tackle a ship unlucky enough to eat the Ion Projector.
Echo wandered down the table unchallenged and Dan certainly had his eyes and mincing up the Emperor pretty quickly and at this stage the shuttle lost a few shields.
Vader finally destroyed Vader at range 1 with some help from the advanced targeting computer and probably some influence from a dark lord somewhere.
Vader continued chase on the wounded Bomber and after an exchange and no less than 3 critical hits I still couldn't put it down. Echo unleashed onto Juno and there was no shields to speak of after the exchange and perhaps a damage card.
Vader revealed a gentle 1 bank stopping closer to the mine than I would like so a barrel roll and boost cleared the mine and allowed me to finally destroy the bomber a few turns too late. Echo opened up on Vader and it chipped off a shield.
From here on in it was a game of cat and mouse and with the higher pilot skill Vader I was able to eventually get enough shots onto Echo to wipe him out. Without a pilot skill 11 Vader I fear Echo would have either destroyed me or the game would have lasted hours.
I want to thank Dan for such a great game and despite some terrible dice rolls (from both sides) it was great to meet another like minded player who also seems to have a fascination with mines and bombs so I look forward to meeting him again even if it's just to chat about TIE Punisher builds.
