My son for whatever reason immediately went about purchasing two Kihraxz fighters taking our total up to three. I'm keen to see what he's been thinking about and no doubt I'll be copping his trial lists over this weekend at some stage.
I was keen to run something different however I didn't think the league was the best place to embarrass myself so I stuck with the Palp/Vader/Juno list I've been running lately. I was very tempted as per usual to change some items up and mainly to get Predator on Vader but in the end I stuck with the design originally intended. This was a blessing as I ended up facing both the named TIE Phantoms in different games and literally a pilot skill 11 Vader is what carried the day in both games.
I was able to get to the shop bang on 1730 and was surprised how quiet the shop was with only myself and 3 other players however by the time I was throwing my dice against Dan and I looked up every table was full which was fantastic to see and Ben has done a great job growing the community here.
My first game against Dan can be read about here but in summary he is a great opponent and it was an entertaining game with us trying to compete for the sheer amount of blank dice rolled.
I then managed to lock horns with my sparring partner Todd who I'd bested with the same list during my birthday games session but hadn't followed it up at the game store or with this list again. The first game his Phantom clipped the shuttle eating an ion token and practically allowed Vader to capitalise and one shot him then the Decimator methodically cleaned everything up whilst a wounded Vader stayed at Range 3 to seal the game.
This time I was keen to see how I could make it turn out a little differently. It was entertaining as usual with banter going back and forth and the asteroids really punished any of the big ships going into the centre and making a decent blockade on one side. Todd was hoping I'd avoid this but not one to turn away from adversity my shuttle took the bet and eventually I was staring down at the Decimator on the opposite table edge. Whisper then begun in the other corner facing towards the Decimator.
Through a series of weaving in and out of asteroids and trying to keep an extra green dice on my TIE Advanced at all times I was able to minimise most of the damage coming my way from the Decimator. The shuttle however easily lost it's shields when the Decimator turned it's attention towards it. Vader was able to get the jump on Whisper and it eventually came down to a 50/50 chance for Todd to either enter an asteroid field or go around it and fortunately for me I guessed correctly and Vader was right on the tail in range 1 removing the Phantom from the game.
After this it was a case of getting the shuttle far away in turtle mode whilst my TIE Advanced stayed in range 3 pinging damage here and there. Vader was certainly the man of the match here and allowed critical hits to sneak through and the combination that sealed the game was turning the Decimators turns to red manoeuvres and gaining a stress token. With the Decimator close to a corner Todd just couldn't manoeuvre out in time and his base overlapped the table edge sealing the game.
As usual it was another entertaining game against Todd and I'm hoping he'll be over during the week to play test a few ideas he has about another Phantom build we've spotted. Yay for me!
