We started shortly after 1730 in the afternoon and I immediately set to work on locking horns with Todd who was running a squad I had fine tuned for him consisting of a Decimator sporting Rear Admiral (yes that one...) backed up with Whisper and it's worth repeating that squads I design for people I can never win against so needless to say he methodically dismantled my Deathrain and 3 TIE Adv over the course of a dozen turns or so which was quite frustrating but gives me cause to start another list.
At least my wife could claim some revenge! That's right, I'd send my wife to fight my battles for me. She hasn't played in months however she was looking forward to the challenge running Chewbacca supported with 2 x B-wings with heavy laser cannons. She made a few errors which cost her some rounds of shooting however eventually she was able to take down the Decimator but Whisper just couldn't be cornered and taken out losing her the game however she put up a far better fight than I could have.
The highlight for the evening for me was to come when my son wanted a game and a gentlemen named Craig happily set up across from him. Hats off to Craig because I know often I find it difficult playing my young kids let alone someone else's but he was calm the whole time and patient when he turned to me to ask questions which was an absolute credit to him. I really liked Craig's list (no pun) with 3 x B-wings running combinations of Ion Cannons and Tacticians and a Y-wing running an Ion Cannon with title. My son however put together his own list yesterday afternoon with no input from his father and produced what would be a winning list. Poe Dameron with BB-8, Corran Horn with R2-D2 and FCS, and finally Horton Salm with TLT.
The initial joust happened and Corran Horn took the fight to them double tapping and leaving a B-wing looking in a bad way and taking some hits in return but over the course of the game it literally looked like my son either had x-ray vision or could tap into some mind reading ability and anticipated his opponents every move. Even his dice were on fire and it was common play to see all 3 evade dice come up with evades and all damage results come up with shooting. In the end it came down to Poe Dameron with 2 hit points left dog fighting against a Y-wing which had struck an asteroid and the T-70 superiority carried the day. I simply said to Craig 'welcome to my world' and he smiled and nodded.
Despite getting my backside completely handed to me it was a good evening and I'm looking forward to returning in a fortnight as I'll be hiking up a little mountain next weekend.
Thanks for reading.
