I registered 2 weeks before the event and only had the opportunity to play 4-5 games before hand and games of X-wing hadn't been frequent in my life due to being overseas for work.
During the last local store league at Collective Gaming I'd had a lot of fun and luck running an Imperial Aces build with Vader and Juno and after a few weeks I'd went onto something else for sake of variety and my opponents sanity.
I didn't particularly want to get curb stomped all day at the regionals and the 'Palp Aces' build seemed to be the logical choice due to my experience with it. Todd was going to run a RAC/Whisper variant which he'd practically run for all 12 weeks of the local league. We got in a few games and I eventually settled on the following:
Omicron Group Pilot – Emperor Palpatine, Electronic Baffle
Soontir Fel – Push the Limit, Royal Guard Title, Stealth Device, Autothrusters
The Inquisitor – Push the Limit, TIE/v1, Proton Rockets, Autothrusters
Electronic baffle was a great addition to the shuttle and allowed me to consistently get some shots off which actually won some games in the end but also would allow me to plan for next turn by removing the stress token and allowing me to perform a red manoeuvre during the following activation phase.
The other choices are simply solid cookie cutter choices and whilst I felt dirty for taking them they certainly did an amazing job when all thrown in the mix. Interestingly enough as well this was the second time I'd ever ran Soontir Fel (the first he was sniped by RAC with Vader on board during a practice game – thanks Todd) so wasn't feeling overly confident about using him but could see his strength on the table.
Just a quick bit about the regionals. They were run by Gavin from Irresistible Force and the TO was Adrian Roberts and both them and the team did an amazing job. The venue was great as well close to everything you'd need and want so it was good to get stuck into the gaming and also the cake was fantastic.
The first round saw me take on Lachlan who was running Bossk and Tel. He proceeded to absolutely curb stomp me in true and proper form. His dice and synergy with his lists were fantastic and mine simply in comparison were not. Lachlan was a superior player and I was easily outmatched in what was my first taste of regionals. I was also (un)lucky enough to get my first prize after this game being the quickest defeat in round 1 and scored a Kylo Ren beer cooler.
It was straight into round 3 and I had a tiny bit of confidence building and was starting to get my head around how to use Soontir Fel. Rod was my opponent and he was running Dengar backed up with IG-88B. Rod was a great friendly player and quick to capitalise on my errors of simply not paying attention. I put the Inquisitor in a fantastic position to launch rockets into the Aggressor but he simply put on the brakes with inertial dampeners and I was one ship down. The shuttle and Soontir however were able to drop Dengar eventually whilst the bot zeroed in on the shuttle allowing Soontir to do what he does best and get into the flank and simply not budge netting me another win.
I struggled big time against this list. Kenny had a fantastic twisted sense of humour similar to mine which made the loss a bit easier and my dice simply abandoned me which didn't help but I certainly felt like Kenny was rolling dice and I was simply removing shields and then ships. I'm still stuck as to what I would have done and what I could have done better.
Troy was piloting a very similar list to mine although rather than Inquisitor in the squad it was Redline was backing up the squad with cluster missiles who undoubtedly had it in for my shuttle. Troy was a great player and managed to take out the Inquisitor and shuttle rather early not before losing his Soontir to some lucky shots. In my mind I'd already chalked this up as a loss but I kept persisting and zoomed Soontir around getting some odd pot shots off here and there and taking no return fire. I eventually cornered the space cow and took the false emperor out of the game and with a limping Redline flying around with no ordnance, Troy conceded the game.
The final around for the day put me up against Isaac who run running Talonbane Cobra, Manaroo and Zuckuss which I didn't have much experience facing off against the latter two. Unfortunatley for Isaac my dice just went into frenzy mode and after 3 turns Talonbane was gunned down between the Inquisitor and Soontir. Manaroo was the next to get axed and then poor Zuckuss eventually got turned into space dust with nowhere to hide.
I felt an apology was required as my dice simply mirrored what Kenny's did earlier in the day.
After the dust settled it turns out I'd placed 15th out of some 58 players which I was really happy with. I'd joked with Todd I'd be happy with top 16 and it appears I'd managed to make that goal so I couldn't be unhappy about my performance at all. One thing I did mention on the long car ride home to get some much needed loaded fries was next time I was intent on running a list that I thoroughly enjoyed rather than a list that is thoroughly effective. If I could find something that crossed over both then I'd be super stoked indeed and immediately I was thinking of Boba Fett somewhere in future lists.
Thanks for reading and a picture of the cake:
