As usual my son was more than happy for face off against his father and straight away I was concerned I was bringing a knife to a gun fight as I was facing off against his BBB list.
Ten Numb - Fire-Control System, "Mangler" Cannon, Nien Nunb, B-Wing/E2
2 x Blue Squadron Pilot - Heavy Laser Cannon
This squad was more than capable of putting the hurt and smashing out one of my TIE Defenders each turn if I wasn't careful. Of course had I taken the TIE/x7 title things would be a little easier but I wouldn't be biting as hard. I simply didn't have the brain power to play any cloak and dagger games and my son appeared to be more interested in throwing around his basketball so I wanted to get his attention.
I ran this squad and whilst it can certainly be argued that it is very average, that is the entire point. It is as simple as it gets, point it at the ship you want to drop, slap down a tractor beam token onto it and light it up. The Ion cannons ensure that some element of control is always played into my hands provided they hit of course.
He would be heading straight into a rock next turn which would mean it would be out of action for at least two turns and more provided he remained free of ion tokens.
The Defender out of range would zoom in and barrel roll to re-engage to ensure through the Ion Cannons only a single ship had complete control.
From here both Defenders get shots onto target and maul Ten.
Well after the initial joust couldn't have gone any worse I think the game and the squad went relatively well. Once I got behind the B's and applied the control through the Ion storm there wasn't a whole lot my son could have done differently. Perhaps a few barrel rolls here and there would have made the difference in surviving a few extra rounds but I think certainly once I got the B onto the rock it was going to be really tough to claw it back as the momentum swayed over to me. Ten did up chipping 2 shields off one of the remaining TIE's so it wasn't a complete white wash from there.
I'll certainly be playing the squad again and no doubt my son will be ready to smash me up with something different. Although he was disappointed in his performance I had to remind him that he obliterated one of my ships in one round of shooting and had he engaged at range 3 for as long as possible and anticipated me coming as fast as I could towards him then it would have been a different game.
I love the TIE/D title and I think it is very easy to get a sense of tunnel vision with the TIE/x7 title as you really want to gain as much benefit from it as possible so it kind of means the majority of the manoeuvres are going to be 3 and greater which isn't a problem in general as if the opponent anticipates it after all it will have an evade token at least. That saying that it still does have some appeal as you can pull a short 1/2 move that simply catches the opponent off guard but I'm not here to talk about the TIE/x7 yet!
Thanks for reading and I'm lucky to say it's holidays for the kids which means lots of gaming in my household which of course directly translates into more blog content.
