Fly what you love
Ironically enough, I still feel way behind the eight ball. The game has been out for a while now and I have only had a handful of games against my kids. This weekend is going to be a massive drop into the X-Wing ocean testing some squads that worked in first edition, and some I would never try unless we were playing on an 'even' playing field.
Yesterday I read a thought provoking blog post from 'Before Setting The Dials' about list building vs net listing. It was an interesting read and at the end of it all I kept coming back to the statement 'Fly what you love'.
With second edition still fairly young and points being balanced often, it is great to see a variety of ships and builds getting flown in many types of configurations. When the TIE Punisher was first released in first edition I was giddy with excitement. Of course, it failed to make a massive impact until second edition came along. Since then, it has been a heavyweight hitter and 'Redline' is capable of throwing a devastating alpha strike onto an unsuspecting opponent. This has been great for me because it is a ship I love, however it also comes with the problem now that every man and their Imperial dog is running it and I don't like to go along with the crowds.
This won't deter me from at least trying it out a few times. Punishers, Defenders and Strikers were draw cards for me in terms of Empire. This weekend will allow some long overdue gaming in that regard but I'm also intrigued to see what ships the kids pick up to throw against me.
Fly what you love!
