Thanks to the Heroes of the Resistance expansion pack, two options now exist for Chewbacca. The first and perhaps most powerful is the immune to critical effects. This pilot is a fantastic stepping stone for beginner pilots as it simply ignores a core mechanic to the game, the only way Chewbacca will in fact receive direct hits or blinded pilots is through Rexler Brath's ability which you don't often see.
With an EPT available you can customise Chewbacca to a certainly extent. C-3PO is a solid choice and Engine Upgrade as per usual. You can get tricky however and take Push The Limit, backed up with the Millenium Falcon card, you can take an evade action, making this YT-1300 fairly tanky.
Likely favourites however are Predator for dice modification without relying on Target Locks, allowing for the focus action to be used or Engine Upgrade. Recon Specialist can be taken to enhance the focus action to use both attacking and defending whilst Chopper makes an interesting case to keep the actions happening even when stressed.
Draw Their Fire sees some synergy with Chewbacca simply because he can absorb damage from a friendly ship and then take a facedown damage card as opposed to it being faceup. You can then get tricky and use R2-D2 crew to attempt to gain a shield back but there is a 50% chance then you'll turn the card face up.
Finally Jan Ors can provide another evade token, although you can't use more than one in a single defend roll.
Unfortunately for the other Chewbacca (Heroes of the Resistance version) pilot ability, it triggers only when friendly ships start being destroyed. With a YT-1300 chewing up close to half of your squad allowance, that will only allow a number of A-Wings or Z-95 Headhunters to become wingmen which isn't the greatest of choices. You can be sure your opponent will simply point everything at Chewbacca, therefore destroying the greatest threat first before moving on.
