Of all the pilot skills, I have always felt that Nera's is so cool. To fire torpedoes out of the normal firing arc is a fantastic way to start an attack run, pick up a target lock, and rather than do the predictable K-turn to continue the attack, just push forward launching a torpedo at the initial target.
A few things do drag the pilot down, though. At pilot skill 5, she is often going to have a difficult time setting targets up. It certainly isn't impossible, but great care needs to be taken. Secondly, you may find your squad begins to be built around her, in terms of buddies who can share target locks (Shara Bey or Dutch Vander).
Still, if you can manage to dodge arcs with her, the enemy will pay for their mistakes. There are many upgrades you could use, but keeping her cheap is ideal. Guidance Chips marries up perfectly for her torpedo shots, and either Veteran Instincts to push her to pilot skill 7, or even Crack Shot to keep the torpedo shot effective. Deadeye can take away the reliance on Fire Control System.
In regards to torpedoes, Flechette torpedoes are an option to catch out Push the Limit aces, but Proton and Plasma torpedoes are decent as well.
